Traditional Schooners: Hoisting the sails
Schooners have been developed for coastal shipping. It is said that in 1713 when the first ship of this kind was launched in Scotland, one of the spectators called out: Oh look how it scoons! Thus, the builder invented the expression “schooner” which has been derived from the Scottish word “to scoon”. You could charter the two-mast schooner NEERLANDIA which was built in 1901 in Groningen in the Netherlands. Until 1980 the ship transported wood and corn to the seaports of north-western Europe. Its exterior has been preserved until today. Additionally, the storage rooms have been turned into snug parlours.
Brig ASTRID, a ship built in 1918, has a very interesting history. They say that ASTRID was involved in smuggling drugs between the Middle East and Europe. During an incidence with the police the ship burned down. Yet, it was completely restored afterwards and since 1999 totally modernized with all possible comfort - thereby keeping its individual character.
Thus, traditional schooners stand for an exclusive mixture of maritime romance, comfort and modern technical standards.
