Kultur- und Gewerbespeicher: Cultural and commercial warehouse

The historical "Speicherstadt" (warehouse district) lies right in the heart of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and constitutes the centre of the old port. The Speicherstadt is the world’s largest still existing warehouse district built on oak stilts. Nowadays, the Speicherstadt offers a fantastic view of the newly built HafenCity (commercial and residential site next to the port). Together they have become an energetic quarter combining traditional and modern aspects of life. The interaction of old warehouses, restaurants, cultural facilities and contemporary office blocks behind historical facades emphasizes the uniqueness of this district

Until recently exotic spices, extravagant carpets, tee and coffee have been stored in the warehouses. Right here you can hold your gala dinner or festive ball with a breathtaking view of the little waterways (Fleet) and brick-lined buildings with green copper roofs. The area between the port and the growing HafenCity features the exhibitions “Hamburg Dungeon” and Europe’s biggest model railway “Miniaturwunderland”. In between those two you will find the warehouse's event and MICE locations with a total surface area of 1250 m².

During the summer of 2004 the traditional warehouse was restored while keeping the authentic character. In 2006 the location was enlarged by a second level with another 525 m². Today, the warehouse's floors 1 and 2 offer five authentic event rooms for festivities, workshops and conferences for 30 up to 1200 guests.

Not only the rooms' original wooden floorboards have been sustained during the reconstruction, the site also impresses with steel beams, pillars, bright brick walls and the typical transportation crane on the outside wall.
